Today, I was asked a simple yet powerful question.
What is the secret to a successful marriage?
I pondered this question for a second, then I responded.
One day my husband and I were having a conversation when this question arose.
He shared with me his perspective. He shared how I would never have to worry about him cheating on me or leaving me, cause he choose me.
He said:I was his choice.
I'm a country girl, and quite a bit of my life was spent fishing. While many children spent their summer vacations enjoying roller coasters and swimming lessons we could be found digging up worms in our parents back yard preparing for another trip to one of my parents favorite fishing hole.
Daddy would line us kids up along the river bank and tell us to be still and to sit quietly. We would sit for hours patiently awaiting a nibble on our cane pole. Our eyes glued to the orange sinker floating across the water. wa in and out of the water indicating we had a hit.
Our little faces would light up as we noticed the dip of the orange cork ball, we were so excited we would jump off our buckets and snatch that cane pole out of the water. Checking to see what we had caught.
To our dismay often the fish had stole the bait or simply swam past for a nibble. Every now and then we were lucky and the fish that came in for the nibble, nibbled a little to much giving us the chance to catch that sucker as they say "hook, line and sinker".
Up until that point I had never heard such a thing.
Never in my life had I heard a guy make the statement such as this. He chose me.
If this was a line he truly had me hook, line and sinker. No pun intended.
The thought of him choosing me, took me by surprise. Kinda like the fish that came in for a nibble. He was caught.
My husband caught my heart.
He completely pulled me out of the water. I was no longer a fish in the sea.
But though he had made his decision, It left me at a cross roads.
I had to make a decision as well.
Twenty-five years later I'm glad I choose him as well.
Over the years I have come to realize that very few couples make the decision.
They went to the alter and said I do.
Some wrote their vows while others repeated them.
But deep in there heart they failed to make a choice.
Once my husband and I clearly made a decision to choose each other. Everyone else was off limits.
No, were not perfect and just like you we have had our ups and downs. At the end of the day we made a choice and we have trusted that decision for quite sometime.
This reminds me of my relationship with Christ. I used to think that I had made a decision for Christ, but was blown out the water when I came to the realization that He just like my husband choose me.
For many are called but few are chosen. Matthew 22:14 (KJV)
As you look at your husband or wife. Ask yourself have you made the choice?
I found that's one of the keys to making it through sickness and health, for richer or poorer, bologna and oodles/noodles. Lol.
Till death do you part.
The choice is yours.
As long as you leave options on the table you truly will never be satisfied.
